*Larry Cool

Larry came to Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings, South Dakota, February 12, 2004, from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where he was a member of the Sioux Valley Genealogical Society.  Larry was also a volunteer at the Family History Center in Sioux Falls.  He is a past two-year president of Brookings Area Genealogical Society.
Larry retired from Eidsness Funeral Home in August of 2012  He has been working on his own business for digitally mapping and databasing cemeteries.  To date he has provided maps which are on display at Lake Campbell Lutheran Cemetery, rural Volga, Brookings County and Fairlawn Cemetery, Aurora, Brookings County.  Along with the maps at the cemeteries are booklets for family use, records and maps on www.findagrave.com , and overlay maps on Google earth.
Currently, Larry is working on about a dozen individual cemeteries.  He has spoken on pioneer and ethnic cemeteries at area genealogical societies, family history center workshops, museums, and last year at the State Fair.
He started this year showing genealogical and historical societies how to build a private website for their members to database the history of all residence and former residence who were born, obtained homesteads, lived, farmed, worked, went to school, went to church, were married, had children, were in the military, died, or were buried in their societies county.  The websites will assist all members to research requests by interested parties for history regarding their ancestors as well as teach members how to better research their own families anywhere in the world..
Larry is also preparing to offer computer labs for students 6th through 11th grades.  He will show them and their parents and/or grandparents how to build private family websites, family trees, or write family histories.  These will be offered through schools and churches.  This will aid scouts to earn merit badges and the rank of Eagle Scout.  It will help students who are asked by their teachers in history, social studies, and English, to write papers on their family's history.  It will also allow families, through sharing and working together, to grow their family history.  Hopefully this will encourage people at a younger age to become aware of their roots and the background that gives them their sense of faith, hope, and charity toward the world and the life on it.
Larry grew up in a funeral home family, and his grandfather gave him a job caring for the cemeteries in the area at an early age.  "I quickly learned to respect and later to value a well cared for cemetery."  He became a 4th generation funeral director, and one of his jobs was to help families with their grave markers, both selection and placement.  He receives many requests to help locate a family member's grave in the area.  His projects combine the digitally mapping of cemeteries, with the databasing of records on findagrave, with the overlaying of the maps on Google earth, with the completion of family trees.
This all started as a tribute to his grandmother who started his interest when a young boy by helping her map and record the cemeteries in Charles Mix County.  He also gives credit to his father who introduced him to PAF and was responsible for getting many of these Charles Mix County cemetery records on the internet and posted at the Platte Public Cemetery.

NOTE: Sadly Larry passed away March 26, 2015 of pancreatic cancer.  Please click here to see memorial.  As a continuing tribute, we ask that you try to implement his ideas in your own cemetery, volunteer to work with youth in teaching them about their Family History, Boys Scout Merit Badges and volunteer at your local Historical or Genealogy Society.

Denise Levenick
In every family, someone ends up with “the stuff.” Denise May Levenick is a writer, researcher, and speaker with a passion for preserving and sharing family treasures of all kinds. She is the creator of the award-winning family history blog,  The Family Curator and author of the new book  How to Archive Family
I love old things, and I’m passionate about preserving family keepsakes.
I live in an old house in Pasadena, California with a growing archive of family keepsakes. Until 2008 I taught journalism and English literature at an all-girls high school located in an old home in my neighborhood. Some days I walked to school like my ancestors, some days I drove my snappy red scooter.
The Family Curator began when I created a course called Reading Women’s Lives. Students learned basic historical research skills and practiced literary and social history analysis to decipher the story of a young woman’s life as revealed through her correspondence.
The life story they uncovered, and the one hundred letters they transcribed, belonged to my grandmother, Arline Kinsel.
The school project was chronicled in an online journal that grew into The Family Curator blog, and was featured at Shades of the Departed online magazine. After leaving the classroom in 2008, I set about learning best practices for working with historical materials. I learned about genealogy, collections, digitizing, cataloging, and preservation, and eventually adapted professional methods recommended by libraries and museums to create a family archive at home.
